Aeschylus was charged that in one of his plays he had revealed the Eleusinian mysteries, and this was probably in the Eumenides, which is full of references to religious subjects. It is even said that his life was threatened while on the stage, and that he only saved himself by taking refuge at the altar of Dionysus.
